Financial Independence Coaching

Are you overwhelmed by the huge amount of information out there?

Would you like a second pair of trained eyes to analyze your financial independence (FI) plans?

Do you need to develop an FI plan from scratch?

Do you have questions on specific topics such as debt repayment, tax strategy, investment allocation, expense management, etc?

If you answered yes to one or more questions, you may benefit from a one-on-one consultation. Please read on through the FAQ’s below for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What are your qualifications?

My professional qualifications include an undergraduate degree in Business, Finance and Economics, an MBA degree, and a Master’s of Accounting Degree. I’m also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). From this, the most valuable things I can offer you include:

  • Deep understanding of capital markets (stocks, bonds, investments in general, asset allocation, withdrawal rates, etc).
  • Ability to thoroughly explain important financial concepts (time value of money, inflation, rates of return, etc.). Some people really appreciate this as they are aware of the concepts and trust they work, but they are much more confident when they understand what’s under the hood so to speak.
  • Tax optimization, answering tax related questions (not professional tax advice, read below).
  • All things spreadsheets (modeling different scenarios to optimize decisions, track investments, rates of return, budgets, etc.).

My non-professional qualifications include being in the FI community for over three years on my own pursuit of FI. My own FI success so far applying all of the above includes: no debt other than a mortgage and being on track to achieve financial independence by age 35, even after getting a late start (too many degrees 🙂 ), and not coming from a wealthy family. I don’t like to “brag” about my success so far, but I feel this information can be useful to you as a potential client.

How much does it cost?

There are two options available:

– Regular Consultation: 1 hour – $70
– In Depth Consultation: 2 hours – $120 ($20 off) – may be split into two 1-hour sessions.

What does a consultation include and not include?

The consultation/coaching is meant to provide answers to your FI related questions. These questions can be specific or broad in nature depending on your needs. The coaching is NOT meant to be professional tax or investment advice. Those will require us both to sign mountains of paperwork, and the fees to be much higher.

Past coaching sessions have addresses questions such as “I want to better understand how to invest money going forward, and divide between tax deferred accounts, Roth’s and regular accounts” or “I need to understand how to withdraw money before I’m 59.5 years old” or “I want to develop a plan to pay off my debt as quick as possible“.

What information should I gather before the consultation?

The more data you bring to the coaching session, the more you will get out of it. Specific data will depend on the specific questions you have, but it is often useful to have the following:

  • Records of monthly and annual income and expenses
  • Net-worth statement (list of assets and liabilities)
  • Copies of tax returns

If you are not currently tracking your expenses, income, and investments, please start now.  You can use any method you like (spreadsheets, pen and paper, online tools, etc.). My own favorite is Personal Capital. With that being said, don’t feel like you have to have perfect records for everything. Just gather as much as you can and we can work with that.

How/where does the consultation take place?

Most consultations take place via video conference through Google Hangouts. All you need is a Gmail account, and a working microphone and speakers. Google Hangouts also has the advantage of allowing us to see each other screens, which is really useful when working on spreadsheets or looking at documents. Consultations can be done over the phone as well.

Testimonials

Juan coaching services are fantastic and would recommend to anyone who’s looking to get their finances in order. I personally reached to get assistance in mitigating my federal tax liability as I’d recently gone through a Roth conversion. Juan helped assessing the projected tax liability I would incur and provided guidance on actions items I can take to reduce my liability. Will definitely continue working with Juan in the future to establish my FI road-map

I had been looking for a qualified professional with a deep knowledge of financial independence (FI) and tax optimization for a while. Fortunately, I found Juan. During my one-on-one with him, Juan was able to analyze my financial plans and offered several tax savings strategies, which once implemented will save me thousands of dollars in taxes. Navigating the complicated tax rules at both the federal and the state levels can be overwhelming, so if you are looking for a professional with academic and work experience to help you plan a more efficient FI journey, Juan is your guy!
